A snowball's chanceWhen it happens, it happens in the middle of the night. Without warning. By the time you know about it, it is too late. It is done. You have been removed. It particularly took you by surprise because of the suddenness. You knew they were big and powerful, but in a way you trusted them. They claimed to be good or, at the very least, not evil. At last, belatedly, they show their true colours. You always knew that there was a secrecy to their operations, but you never suspected they operated like this. The charges are vague. They don't tell you what you are accused of. Just that you have violated the rules. No evidence is provided, although at some point, contact with an automated official - you didn't expect to speak to a real human being, did you? - tells you that the evidence has been gathered by their security aparatus, but, to protect itself, you will not see the evidence. You're offerred the chance to appeal. You think surely if you can just get through to a real human being, rather than automatons just following their orders, surely you'll be able to convince them. You'll be acquitted. You'll be back. Is it hope or is it denial? Is it just delusion? The idea that you matter to them? And then you realise. It doesn't matter. Google can say their motto is "Don't be evil" all they like. But if they are going to show that their understanding of history finishes somewhere in the middle of Stalin's reign, people will start turning from them. And unlike companies with real products, their entire operation depends on good will. Anyway, I'll let you know how the appeal process goes. CommentsComment from ReviAt times like these it's best to remain calm and remember Hanlon's Razor. I respondHow can we take what they've done as stupidity? |
